Whole Leaf Teas and Infusions

Our extensive range of whole-leaf speciality teas includes Black, Green, Oolong and Yellow teas. We change the tea menu from time to time due to seasonal availability and in order to bring you the widest range possible! When preparing the tea we weigh out the tea leaves and the water and give you a tea timer and a carafe so that you can decant your tea when it has reached the perfect infusion. Your tea is served in a glass tea-ere so that you can watch the leaves unfurl as you relax. We also offer a selection of whole-leaf caffeine-free infusions. Our teas and infusions are all sourced from experts who deal direct with growers.

Ruth spent 5 years working for Fairtrade pioneers Cafedirect, where she worked directly with both coffee and tea growers. Whilst working there she visited tea growers in Kenya to find out more about growing, picking and processing tea and to visit projects supported by Fairtrade premiums. She also learned about Chinese teas and some of the history, philosophy and culture of tea whilst visiting the tea growing province of Fujian in China to study Kung Fu. If you want to try a new tea and are not quite sure what to try, ask for a recommendation to suit your taste preference or just work your way through the tea menu! Bean & Bud was awarded Best Tea in the UK in the Beverage Standards Awards 2014.  Ruth also came 3rd in the inaugural UK Tea Brewers Cup 2015.

Black Teas

Bean & Bud House Blend

Specially crafted for us by Trumpers Tea. A full bodied and bright blend of 100% Fairtrade certified teas including malty Assam, zesty Kenyan and Malawi Satemwa Estate. Ideal for any time of the day.

Earl Grey

A fine, bright tea from Southern India scented with bergamot for a zesty citrus flavour

Malawi Satemwa Estate

From the Satemwa family estate at the foot of the Thyolo mountains, this special tea has a full bodied but smooth and slightly spicy flavour.

Keemun Gong Fu Hong Cha

From Qimen region, China, a wonderful bright black tea with winey and fruity notes.

Bohea Lapsang

The difference between Bohea and commercial Lapsang is enormous, perhaps similar to the distinction between mass-produced whiskies and slowly made properly aged, artisan malts. Drying the leaves slowly over barkless pine wood fires gives Wuyi Bohea soft, lingering smokiness, making it an incredibly smooth cup.

Decaffeinated Ceylon

The best Ceylon, gently decaffeinated without chemicals.

Masala Chai

Assam tea flavoured with spices including cardamom, ginger, cinnamon and vanilla for a warm, soothing and spicy brew.

Green Teas

Sichuan Dew

Handpicked in spring and steamed in the humid plains of rural Sichuan Province. In the cup this green tea is fresh and sappy.

Japanese Sencha

A beautiful emerald green sencha tea from Kirishima, Kagoshima. This unoxidised tea has a silky mouth feel with notes of sweet pea and fresh grasses.

Jasmine Pearls

The youngest leaves infused with jasmine blossoms and rolled into pellets. When infused with water these ‘pearls’ unfurl to produce a wonderful scent and a delicate flavour.

Oolong Teas

Ti Guan Yin (Iron Goddess of Mercy)

This lightly oxidised oolong tea from the Fujian province of China has a golden liquor and is fragrant, refreshing and fruity in taste.

Wuyi Oolong Water Sprite (Shui Xian)

A gorgeously complex dark oolong from the Wuyi mountains, Fujian Province, China. This tea displays gentle warmth with notes of rose and peach, a smooth texture and subtle fragrant wood notes.

White Teas

White Peony (Pai Mu Dan)

A beautiful white tea picked in April 2015 in Fuding Shan Hu Gang Garden, Fujian Province.
Complex notes of melon and cucumber with a rounded mouthfeel.

Silver Needle

The most famous of white teas, only whole buds were picked in March 2015 in Guanxi Province and left to dry naturally. The tea has sweet notes of spring flowers, melon, cucumber and honey.

Infusions

Peppermint

Bright and beautifully minty with a refreshing, clean taste.

Fresh Mint

Simply fresh mint leaves steeped in hot water for a sweet and refreshing mint flavour.

Rooibos (Redbush)

A warm mellow aroma with a sweet, nutty taste. Naturally caffeine free and rich in antioxidants and Vitamin C.

Blackcurrant & Hibiscus

Whole blackcurrants, berries and cracked hibiscus shells make this sumptuous herbal infusion refreshing, vivid and intense.

Lemongrass & Ginger

Real lengths of refreshing lemongrass and whole pieces of warming ginger produce a warming, spicy brew with a refreshing citrus edge.

Lemon Verbena

A smooth but zesty lemon flavour guaranteed to give you a lift or provide a brilliant stress buster!

Hot Chocolate

We don’t just serve any hot chocolate! Our hot chocolate is made from real melted chocolate tablets in four single origin options. Richer and less sweet than regular hot chocolate, a complete indulgence!  You can even enjoy if you’re vegan: try any of the hot chocolates except White with oat milk.

Single origin hot chocolate made with whole chocolate tablets

White & Vanilla

from Ivory Coast. Sweet and creamy with natural vanilla.

Classic Milk

from Venezuela. 58% cocoa. Light and sweet with slightly fruity notes.

Dark

from Ecuador. 70% cocoa. Typical flavour of the Arriba Nacional bean: floral and herbal.

Extra Dark

from Madagascar. 82% cocoa. An intense flavour of red fruits.

And the Award Goes To...

We had a lovely time at the Beverage Standards Association Awards evening at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on 10 November 2014.  It was great to meet some old and some new friends, talk shop as much as we wanted and have a great get together with like minded people.

Best_Tea_Bean_Bud_Ruth_Hampson_and_GMitchell_Rigway(10Nov14)Of course, the real business of the evening was to present this year's Beverage Standards Awards.  We were very proud to have been shortlisted in 3 categories: Best Tea in the UK, Best in Raising Standards in the UK and Best Cappuccino in the UK.  We were absolutely thrilled and surprised when our name was called out as the winner of Best Tea in the UK!  We had hardly time to gather ourselves after being presented with this award when the Best in Raising Standards award was announced.  Imagine our excitement to be named winner of this award too!  Absolutely thrilled and so proud.

We were also presented with accreditation as a 5-Cup (Outstanding) winner, one of only 7 businesses in the UK to receive the highest accreditation, which makes the shop a destination for visitors.  This is an important award to receive as it takes into account all aspects of the environment and customer experience of the shop, as well as the quality of the drinks served. This award is a credit to our whole team at Bean & Bud who work with pride and passion to deliver excellent service to all our customers.

_GMF1445_DxOThe tea we were assessed on was Huo Shan Yellow Buds.  The assessors were also impressed by the range and quality of our teas, and the care we take over brewing the tea, weighing out every dose and paying attention to temperature and infusion.  Since the visit we have introduced the addition of an attractive carafe when serving our teas, so that they can be decanted to prevent over-infusing.

The award for Raising Standards is awarded to a business that has invested time and effort into delivering exceptional standards across the board.  Again, we were very proud to receive this recognition for the hard work and passion that goes into our business.

We are thrilled with these awards, but will not be resting on our laurels; we will continue to deliver exceptional quality and service to all our customers.
