New beginnings…and exciting times ahead3 December 2018 Uncategorized
A warm welcome from your new hosts!
There are some new faces behind the bar at Bean & Bud…and after a hectic start they’ve finally found time to say hello!
Hi everyone! It’s hard to believe, but we’ve been in charge at Bean & Bud for nearly a month now…and this is the first chance we’ve had to update the blog.
In case you hadn’t heard – Yes, it’s true! – Harrogate’s original specialty coffee shop is now under new ownership, as Helen and I have taken over the shop after a summer long transfer of the business. It’s always a nervous time when things change – especially for the new guys – but we really can’t believe how brilliant the response has been!
Season of mists and… great coffee!15 September 2018 Uncategorized
Keats called it the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. We just call Autumn the season of great coffee! Some of our favourites are around in Autumn, most notably Ethiopian Naturals. We take great care over planning our coffee offer, changing every couple of weeks to bring you the best of the crop. Coffee is a seasonal product and each year we look forward to welcoming old favourites as well as discovering new ones. Why not try something new next time you are in!
Another Dining Popup on the way..!10 August 2018 Uncategorized
From time to time we host amazing dining popups, as those of you lucky enough to have attended any of these will know. Our last popup was a Persian inspired evening featuring the culinary skills of Kian Lian, and he will be returning on Thursday 30 August, this time with a Summer Mediterranean menu. There will be 4 courses, each paired with a delicious white wine plus a welcome glass of English pink sparkling wine. Tickets are already flying out so book your place and don’t miss out!

A great cupping event…18 May 2018 Uncategorized
Thanks Lewis and Kane from Nude Espresso for a wonderful cupping event on 17 May. The event was really well attended by both customers and fellow baristas from a number of coffee shops in Harrogate. It was great to see how the coffee scene in the town is both thriving and supportive. There were some great coffees on the table including a couple of surprises, and it was a great fun and informative event. We hope to work much more with Nude in the future and will be featuring one of the coffees from the table, Nicuaragua Finca La Venus, on espresso from next week. If you’d like to attend a similar event in future do keep an eye out on the website and social media for information.

Working with Roaster Partners20 February 2018 Uncategorized
We have always worked with a small number of amazing coffee roasting partners, and in recent weeks have begun new relationships, with roasters and people we have been aware of and friendly with for some time. We always choose our roaster partners carefully, based on similar ethics and outlooks, the way they choose to work with their customers and the way they source and of course roast their coffee.
It’s Here – Burundi Takeover!29 January 2018 Uncategorized
As part of our ongoing objective to give predominance and respect to the growers who produce our fantastic coffee, we are thrilled to launch a ‘board takeover’ of Burundi coffees in collaboration with our friends at North Star Roasters. Holly of North Star recently spent a week in Burundi as an international judge of the Cup of Excellence competition – a prestigious and demanding measure of quality in speciality coffee which was started in Central America and in which Burundi is so far the only African participant. Coffees which achieve the Cup of Excellence can go on to command high prices at auction.
The ‘Latte Levy’8 January 2018 Uncategorized
There has been a lot of press activity in the last couple of days about the idea of a ‘latte levy’ – the possibility of introducing a charge for using disposable takeaway cups. So is this a good idea? The recent introduction of a fee for using plastic carrier bags has had a great effect, with up to 85% reduction in the use of plastic bags. Anyone who is concerned for the environment will be pleased with this outcome. Not only do plastic bags fill up landfill, they make their way into our precious oceans and endanger wildlife.
New Coffee Empowers Women Coffee Farmers27 November 2017 Uncategorized
We’re really pleased to be able to put a coffee on the bar this week that not only tastes great, but helps women in its country of origin. Rebuild Women’s Hope (RWH) is a non-profit organisation based in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. It was established in 2013 by gender equity pioneer Marceline Budza, with the aim of empowering Congolese women.
Slurping good fun at the tea event20 November 2017 Uncategorized
We had a great time at our tea tasting event on 16 November. Claire Trumper, expert tea taster and blender, took us through the processes of growing and picking teas, plus the differences between the orthodox and ctc processes. Next it was time for us to put our knowledge to the test by tasting each of the constituent teas that make up our custom house blend tea, also created by Claire. She explained how some of the teas contribute flavour and some colour and appearance. Finally we got to taste some rooibos infused gin cocktails! Altogether a great fun and informative evening. Thanks to Claire and all who attended.
